Adwoa Safo responds to the NPP General Secretary over the media gag order, saying, “Nobody can silence me.”

Sarah Adwoa Safo, a former member of parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, has retaliated against Justin Frimpong Kodua, the general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claiming that he lacks the power to silence her or any other party member.

Adwoa Safo defended her right to free speech yesterday on JoyNews, claiming that the NPP’s rule prohibiting members from discussing internal party issues with the media was unconstitutional.

“We all have the right to express ourselves, and that includes me,” she said.

Her comments were a direct reaction to the General Secretary’s message warning party members not to comment publicly on matters that are being handled internally.

Highlights the public condemnation of Kodua

The former MP questioned the General Secretary’s consistency, pointing to his own remarks made in public after the NPP lost the 2024 election.

“After we lost the election, the general secretary started giving speeches in public and traveling about outlining the circumstances. She claimed that he even went so far as to advise others not to hold him responsible for the defeat.

He criticized former President Nana Akufo-Addo for reportedly disregarding party recommendations during cabinet meetings in a radio interview, which she also cited.

“A statement is currently being released when it’s my turn to speak. Where must he go to accomplish that? She asked.

She also rejected the comments that was made against her, stating that the General Secretary should speak privately if he had any personal issues.

“If he wants to write me a letter, he should do it in private because he was on the radio himself. I don’t believe I need to answer to this statement because it is too ambiguous.”

“Nobody can silence me”

Adwoa Safo stated unequivocally that she would not be silenced, claiming that the NPP is a group endeavor rather than a personal property.
“The party isn’t for anyone, and nobody took me there. No one can make me leave or make me keep my lips shut since we are all there to build the celebration,” she said.
Additionally, she drew attention to the growing discontent among party members and urged the General Secretary to take note of the issues being voiced online.

“He ought to check out how the party members are criticizing him on social media. He shouldn’t let himself be influenced or utilized for the benefit of others since he has an election approaching. Your base would want someone to speak for them if they are resentful and feel ignored.

Responding to “character assassination”

The former MP also talked about what she called an effort to damage her standing in the party.

“I have been the victim of character assassination. “My own party has defamed me,” she complained.

She claims that she has been unjustly painted in a bad light and is resolved to correct the record.

“Whatever they have said about me in an attempt to undermine me is untrue. “I will see to it that the truth is known,” she demanded.

Freedom of speech is still a fundamental right that shouldn’t be restricted, according to Adwoa Safo.

“No one should be silenced for voicing their opinion, especially when it’s a constitutional right,” she said.

Her remarks exacerbate the internal conflicts that have emerged within the NPP over the party’s leadership choices and future course since the 2024 election defeat.
