According to the Vatican, Pope Francis passed away following a brain stroke that caused irreparable heart failure and a coma. He also disclosed his funeral preferences.
The 88-year-old pope’s death certificate, which was made public on Monday, stated that he had gone into a coma before to his passing.
The Pope requested to be buried “in the ground, without particular ornamentation” but with the inscription “Franciscus” in his final testament, which was made public by the Vatican.
Instead of being buried at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, where many former popes have been buried, Francis stated that he preferred to be buried in Rome’s Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
According to a Vatican spokesperson, his casket may be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica as early as Wednesday morning so that the faithful might pay their respects.

As a young man, the Pope had had a portion of his lung removed due to a persistent lung condition.
He suffered from health problems during his latter years, and on February 14th, he was brought to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after experiencing a respiratory crisis that progressed to double pneumonia.
This resulted in his longest hospital stay during his 12-year pontificate, lasting 38 days.
However, on Easter Sunday, the day before he died, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in the world came out to bless throngs of people in St. Peter’s Square.
In a private session at the Vatican prior to the public appearance, the Pope “exchanged good wishes” with US Vice President JD Vance.
After the news of his passing spread around Rome, bells tolled in church towers.
