President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the need of budgetary restraint in his administration and warned deputy ministers that the people of Ghana, not government personnel, should be the beneficiaries of public cash.
During the swearing-in of 13 deputy ministers and a minister of state on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Jubilee House, the president emphasized that judicious expenditure is the foundation of his lean government strategy.
“Our choice to operate a lean government goes beyond simply cutting back on the number of ministers or Presidency employees,” he said.
It is predicated on the idea that prudent use of public resources is required. To guarantee that resources are distributed effectively and responsibly, the government must practice fiscal restraint.
He emphasized that the financial burden imposed on individuals through taxes must be matched with government spending.
“Investments that directly benefit Ghanaians must get the majority of public funding. The largest beneficiaries must not be those in charge of these monies,” he cautioned.
The president’s comments come after his government decided to reduce the number of political appointments, appointing deputy ministers exclusively to departments that needed more help.
In addition, he declared that there would be fewer presidential workers than in the previous administration.
