After suffering a case of bronchitis, the pope was hospitalized to the Gemelli hospital in Rome on February 14.
Benedict XVI, who became the first pope to leave office in 2013 owing to poor health, was succeeded by Francis.

The news of Pope Francis’s passing devastated my wife and myself the most.
However, knowing that His Holiness was able to offer an Easter greeting to the Church and the world he served with such dedication during his life and mission has helped to soothe our sad hearts.
His compassion, concern for the Church’s unity, and unwavering dedication to the common interests of all believers and good-willed individuals who strive for the betterment of others will be recognized as hallmarks of his holiness.
Many others throughout the world shared his view that taking care of Creation is an existential manifestation of trust in God.
He had a significant impact on many people’s lives via his work and concern for the environment and humanity.
The Queen and I were deeply touched to be able to see His Holiness earlier this month, and we particularly cherish our encounters with him throughout the years.
We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Church he served so resolutely, as well as to the innumerable individuals worldwide who will be grieving the tragic loss of this devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, motivated by his example.
