In light of Pope Francis’s passing, the four games in the top division of Italian football that were planned for Monday have been postponed.
Pope Francis, who had just been released from the hospital after five weeks of treatment for an illness, passed away at the age of 88, the Vatican said Monday morning.
Easter Monday, an Italian national holiday, was supposed to be the date of four Serie A games: Torino vs. Udinese, Cagliari vs. Fiorentina, Genoa vs. Lazio, and Parma vs. Juventus.
The Italian top flight’s regulatory body stated that the games will be rescheduled in due time.
Pope Francis succeeded Pope Benedict XVI as head of the Catholic Church in 2013.
Since he was a little boy, the 88-year-old has been an avid supporter of the Argentine football team San Lorenzo.
After his death, several Serie A teams paid their respects to the Pope.
“A loss that deeply saddens our city and the entire world,” a statement from Roma said.
“His faith, his humility, his courage and his dedication have touched the hearts of millions of people, making him a moral reference of our time.”
