In response to recurrent gunfights and conflicts in the region, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have stepped up operations in Bawku and the other communities.
The GAF said that forces had carried out a cordon and search operation in Binduri in a statement signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, and dated Monday [April 21, 2025].
This came after reports of intermittent gunfire in the early hours of Monday near the Binduri Central Market.
With assistance from the police, a combined team from the Joint Task Force and the 11 Mechanised Battalion quickly arrived on the site.
To enable a comprehensive search, the area was roped off.
According to the statement, “one suspected shooter was taken into custody and turned over to the police.”
An empty M16 magazine, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammo, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, one helmet, and an AK-47 and G3 rifle were among the weapons and goods recovered.
Unknown gunmen were said to have tried to infiltrate Binduri later that day.
They engaged in a gunfight after being stopped by patrolling military men. The assailants left the area.
The GAF reports that peace has returned to the region. Troops are still on high alert in case there are any further disruptions.
According to the Armed Forces, it is assisting peace operations in Bawku by collaborating with other security organizations.
As efforts to restore long-lasting peace to the region continue, it called on locals and the public to work together.
GHANA ARMED FORCES CONDUCTS CORDON AND SEARCH IN BAWKU
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), in its efforts to assist the civil authorities to maintain law and order in Bawku and its environs, has intensified operations in response to ongoing clashes and intermittent gunfire in the area.As part of these efforts, troops have conducted a series of cordon and search operations aimed at restoring calm and enhancing security.
In the early hours of Monday, 21 April 2025, troops deployed at BINDURI heard sporadic gunshots coming from the Binduri Central Market area. Personnel swiftly moved to the location and cordoned off the area. A combined team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, supported by the Police, proceeded to conduct detailed search operations to identify and apprehend those involved.
During the operation, one suspected gunman was arrested and handed over to the Police. Items retrieved during the search included one empty M16 rifle magazine, an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, and one helmet.
Later in the day, some unknown gunmen tried to infiltrate Binduri but military personnel on patrols prevented the infiltration. This led to an exchange of fire between the military and the unknown gunmen who fled the scene.
Troops are on high alert to respond to any new threats, but the situation is currently under control.Residents and the public are urged to support continued efforts to restore normality, as the GAF, in close collaboration with other security authorities, remains dedicated to ensuring the peace and security of BAWKU.
