After winning a $18 million defamation case against Kennedy Agyapong in the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey, investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has spoken out.
“This ruling is more than just a legal victory—it is a clear declaration that deception and character assassination are unacceptable in our culture,” Anas said.
In contrast to his unsuccessful case in Ghana in 2018, he underlined that the decision demonstrates that justice is served when due procedure is followed. He recounted, “Justice Eric Baah denied me justice and even painted me—the plaintiff—as a criminal, even though Mr. Agyapong himself acknowledged that there was insufficient evidence.”
Anas attributed his win to the US system’s impartiality, pointing out that Agyapong used the identical “Who Watches the Watchman” arguments as did in Ghana but was still defeated unanimously.
“This result demonstrates that the truth wins out and that everyone must be held accountable, regardless of their status or power,” he said.
He cautioned lawmakers, “You cannot take the media for granted,” sending a powerful message. In order to keep leaders responsible and examine power, the press is essential.
Anas promised that the battle against corruption would not stop and thanked his supporters, legal team, and everyone else who has been there for him.
