The health status of Ken Ofori-Atta is disclosed by the Special Prosecutor.

In response to a recent summons by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, revealed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been diagnosed with cancer. His legal team informed him of this news.

Mr. Agyebeng verified the diagnosis during a news conference on Monday, June 2, saying it was in a letter that Mr. Ofori-Atta’s attorneys sent on May 28, 2025.

According to the Special Prosecutor, the letter told the OSP that the former Finance Minister could not travel to Ghana as planned because he had been diagnosed with cancer and was set to start treatment on June 13, 2025.

“A medical expert has diagnosed Mr. Ofori-Atta with cancer and has set aside June 13, 2025, for treatment, so he will not be able to return to the jurisdiction as scheduled,” Agyebeng said in a letter dated May 28, 2025, from Mr. Ofori-Atta’s attorney to the Special Prosecutor.

But according to the OSP, this explanation is insufficient to justify Mr. Ofori-Atta’s ongoing absence. Mr. Agyebeng claims that although the diagnosis has been registered, his office has not received an official medical report verifying the patient’s health state to back up the allegation.

The Special Prosecutor further noted that the office has not yet received credible medical evidence, adding, “His lawyers stated that, to the knowledge of the OSP, this change in circumstance has been brought to the attention of the court before.”

Given the circumstances, Mr. Ofori-Atta has once again been listed as a sought individual and a fugitive from justice for not showing up for an in-person interrogation. Mr. Agyebeng emphasized that the OSP will not accept the former minister’s absence since it is a type of selective collaboration.

The Special Prosecutor declared, “We insist that he be physically present here.” “A suspect in a criminal investigation does not choose the methods that are most convenient for him or how the investigative body conducts its investigations.” In this instance, we will not tolerate this behavior.

For suspected financial irregularities during his time as Finance Minister, Mr. Ofori-Atta is presently the subject of an inquiry.
