Head coach of the Sudan national team James Kwesi Appiah has explained why he has been late returning to the team’s training camp, stating that he has a personal commitment in addition to financial difficulties.
Although the Ghanaian coach acknowledged that his absence was caused by delayed wage payments, he also decided to stay in Ghana to attend the burial of Yaw Frimpong (Nana Pooley), a devoted Asante Kotoko fan.
Actually, Pooley’s burial caused me to postpone. Additionally, some payments were delayed, but Appiah told Ghanasportspage, “I’ve met with their embassy and I hope to leave tomorrow.”
Appiah has been in Ghana since guiding Sudan to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His return was initially scheduled to supervise Sudan’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying preparations.

His prolonged stay has caused a minor hiccup in Sudan’s training schedule in Saudi Arabia, where the squad is honing its strategies in preparation for important games against South Sudan and Senegal.
Now that his financial issues have been settled, Appiah will return and carry on Sudan’s progress under his direction.
Sudan, led by Kwesi Appiah, made a big impression at the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers by defeating Ghana 2-0 in Benghazi after drawing 0-0 with them in Accra. This outcome was crucial to Ghana’s shocking inability to earn a spot in the Nations Cup for the first time in two decades.
Last November, Sudan’s last qualifier in Benghazi ended in a critical 0-0 tie with Angola, securing them AFCON qualification.
Sudan has now been selected to play in the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco, joining Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Equatorial Guinea in Group E.
