Prominent IMANI Africa figures, like as Vice President Kofi Bentil and Founding President Franklin Cudjoe, have advised President John Dramani Mahama against dismissing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
In a Facebook post, Kofi Bentil cautioned that Dr. Dampare’s dismissal would be a recurrence of what he called the previous administration’s unlawful expulsion of former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo.
“We ought to make an effort to avoid becoming what we previously denounced. Domelevo was fired for doing out his duties! It was declared incorrect by the Supreme Court. Apart from executing his job exceptionally well, what else has the IGP done? I hope the NDC won’t replicate the NPP’s wrongdoings. Bentil wrote.
Additionally, he pleaded with President Mahama to uphold due process and wait for the Supreme Court to provide a verdict in a matter involving the termination of security chiefs before taking any action. On May 7, 2025, the court is anticipated to render its decision.
He emphasized that “the government should respect the rule of law and wait for the Court’s ruling.”
Additionally, Bentil reaffirmed that Dr. Dampare has led the Ghana Police Service with diligence and professionalism, saying, “This IGP has been great at his job and should have been retained for all our sakes.” President Mahama should at least show that he accepts the rule of law and wait for the Supreme Court to make a decision, even if he want to replicate the NPP’s blunders. We hope Ghana would experience the promised reform rather than worsening the NPP’s transgressions.
Dr. Dampare is a “consummate professional” whose leadership has revolutionized the Ghana Police Service, according to Franklin Cudjoe.
“If someone who has been a true professional, advanced through the ranks, improved our country’s security, and—most importantly—survived every dagger from both inside and outside the service is relieved of his position without any negative findings, that would be sad.” Instead of strong partisanship, we need to insist on professionalism. “Keep them when you find them—there aren’t many good men,” Cudjoe said.
