Veronica Commey, a sports journalist, has been named as Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), marking her move from journalism to sports administration.
Minister for Youth and Sports Kofi Adams announced her appointment on Monday, March 24, 2025, during the opening ceremony of a sports psychology training program at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Commey, a writer and long-time member of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), will be one of two deputies for Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the NSA’s current Acting Director General. The other Deputy Director General is Gideon Hammond, a sports administrator.
She previously worked as the Chief Sports Journalist at the Ghana News Agency (GNA) before going freelance and working with international sports bodies. Her administrative experience includes working as Head of Corporate Affairs at the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) from 2015 to 2017.
Commey’s extensive expertise includes working as the Media Officer for Team Ghana in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in France in 2018.
Historically, the NSA has had two Deputy Director Generals, one in charge of Administration and the other of the Technical Directorate. However, it is unclear what exact tasks Commey and Hammond will be allotted under the current leadership structure.
Her appointment is viewed as a strategic move, bringing media knowledge to the sports administration space. Her background in media and business affairs is intended to help the NSA improve communication, stakeholder engagement, and policy implementation.
