Harvard University sued the Trump administration at the federal level to block projected cutbacks worth billions of dollars.
The lawsuit, which was filed on Monday, is a part of a spat that intensified last week when the prestigious university turned down a set of requests that the Trump administration said were intended to stop diversity efforts and combat anti-Semitism at the school.
President Donald Trump threatened the university’s tax-exempt status and halted $2.2 billion (£1.7 billion) in government financing.
In a statement to the institution on Monday, Harvard President Alan M. Garber stated, “The consequences of the government’s overreach will be severe and long-lasting.”
Later on Monday evening, the White House issued a statement in response.
“The luxury train of government money to universities like Harvard, which use tax funds from low-income American families to reward their egregiously overpaid bureaucrats, is coming to an end. Taxpayer monies are a privilege, and Harvard fails to satisfy the basic standards necessary to acquire that privilege”, said White House spokesman Harrison Fields.
According to Mr. Garber, the funding freeze had an impact on important research, such as studies on Parkinson’s illness, Alzheimer’s disease, and pediatric cancer.
“In recent weeks, the federal Government has launched a broad attack on the critical funding partnerships that make this invaluable research possible,” the complaint filed by the institution stated.
“This case involves the Government’s efforts to use the withholding of federal funding as leverage to gain control of academic decisionmaking at Harvard.”
Days earlier, the Trump administration endangered Harvard’s ability to accept international students in addition to money.
Mr. Garber, who is Jewish, said that there have been anti-Semitic incidents on the Harvard campus, but he said he has set up task teams to address the issue. According to him, the institution would make public the findings of two task groups that examined prejudice against Muslims and anti-Semitism.
The well-known US university in Massachusetts is not the only organization that has to deal with the withholding of government funds, which are crucial for financing innovative scientific discoveries.
Other private Ivy League universities have also been singled out by the government, which has suspended $1 billion at Cornell University and $510 million at Brown University.
Others, like Columbia University, which was the focal point of last year’s pro-Palestinian college demonstrations, have acceded to some demands under the threat of $400 million in federal funding.
Accepting government-approved external audits of Harvard’s employment and admissions records as well as its curriculum was one of the requests made of the university. Harvard responded by issuing a scathing letter in which they were rejected.
Harvard’s attorneys informed the administration on April 14 that the university would not cede its autonomy or its constitutional rights.
“No private university, including Harvard, can consent to being seized by the federal government. As a result, Harvard will not formally accept the conditions of the government’s agreement.
Harvard alumnus and former US President Barack Obama declared his support for the school.
