The Ghanaians An Afro-Spiritual performer named Enam Keteku Angela, better known by her stage name Enam, has urged her peers to embrace their culture rather than mimic other cultures through their music.
She is convinced that promoting Ghanaian music internationally requires being unique and genuine.
Enam voiced concerns in a media interview about the growing trend of Ghanaian musicians, especially up-and-coming ones, copying Western styles rather than creating their own distinctive Ghanaian sounds.
She emphasized how important it is for our musicians to support regional customs and history.
“I think that encouraging authenticity in our creative industry is the only way for our nation to prosper and surpass the expectations set.”
“We must use authentically Ghanaian works to represent our nation.” We can imitate Americans, but it doesn’t mean we can ever be more American than they are,” she said.
Enam, a supporter of Afro-Spiritual music, also demanded that the genre receive more attention and backing. She thinks it has the capacity to enthrall audiences around the world and possesses a profound spiritual force that ties individuals to their ancestors.
“Afro-Spiritual is a music style inspired by an ancient genre from the Hadzivodushis of the Yahweh Shrine,” she says.
She went into further detail on the profound nature of ancestral and spiritual music, characterizing it as an art form with a strong historical and human foundation.
“The spirits that create authentic Ghanaian music are enchanted.” These are the cries of people who suffered from abuse, torture, and slavery. As their dripping blood filled the rivers and oceans they traversed in boats and ships, they sung through sweat and tears. They made these noises permanent by imprinting them in the realms.
They hear us and respond when we call to them using their sounds. We don’t realize what we are missing, she said. “Yes, the atumpan, fontomfrom, gongon, konga, the bells, horns, shakers, and the chachas.”
She went on to say that spiritual and ancestral music is an unavoidable divine calling.
Nothing, not even myself, can stop spiritual and ancestral music from serving its purpose. I made an effort. Imagine relinquishing the urge to compete or copy what is deemed normal and instead being led by the spirits of sound.
“You perceive yourself beyond the norm, in other dimensions. Some give substance to what appears superficial, but they are like demigods in desolate settings.
“It’s about receiving cosmic sounds and important messages from the sacred realms, gifts from spirit guides that make life more meaningful and purposeful,” she explained, adding that it goes beyond simply creating spiritual music.
Outside of the studio, Enam has established a solid reputation for her captivating live performances, landing appearances on prominent platforms in Ghana. She showcased her growing popularity by highlighting some of the significant events she had performed at.
“I receive several assignments from the private, mainstream, and corporate sectors. It was truly an incredible experience for me to perform at both the 2024 Ghana’s Most Beautiful opening and grand finals.
Additionally, I opened at the 2024 3Music Awards, performed with Smallgod at Detty Rave 2024, and opened for Black Sherif at his Zama Disco concert. I also performed with UK artists Darkoo, Smallgod, Moliy, and Black Sherif at Fuego on The Beach.
“I played at the AWDF event at the Lancaster Hotel, opened for Rocky Dawuni’s jazz event at +233, and appeared on stages at the Volta Region’s Tsadidi and Xetoto Art Festival. The list continues. I’m still accepting gig bookings,” she stated.
As for the future, Enam is preparing what she calls a “groundbreaking spiritual album.”
“The first spiritual record in music history will be the one I have coming out. These are the New World’s sounds, created to uplift and nourish each and every soul that interacts with it.
Within the category of “Afro-Spiritual Music,” which is based on cosmic sounds and dimensional energies, this album offers a comprehensive collection of spiritual sound baths.
“It offers profound healing and conveys significant messages through chants and rhythmic medicine.”
“With an unparalleled impact, this record will inspire more testimonials and establish a new benchmark for Ghana in the international music industry. “This is the world’s ‘new gospel,'” she continued.
