Put development and accountability first, the regional minister advises MDCEs.

Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, the Eastern Regional Minister, has called on Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) to give development projects top priority in order to serve the populace.

She clarified that the creation of jobs, the development of public facilities, and the implementation of beneficial programs to reduce poverty must be the main priorities.

In order to plan for the region’s growth, she made the call last Friday, May 29, during a meeting in Koforidua with all of the MDCEs in the area.

Local government

In order to coordinate development initiatives and fortify local government frameworks in the area, the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) regularly engages and orients MDCEs.

The purpose of the meeting was to refine the MDCEs in every facet of their discussions. Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the NDC, Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the Policy Advisor at the Office of the Vice-President, and a few regional and constituency executives also attended.

Since they were President John Dramani Mahama’s direct emissary and his front-line development agents, Mrs. Awatey said the RCC will always stand with them.

Actual outcomes

“Our people look up to us not just for direction but for real tangible results ranging from urban development, clean water, youth empowerment, and reliable healthcare delivery, which your leadership should shape the quality of life for thousands of our citizens,” she said.
During their conversations, the regional minister also emphasized the necessity for the MDCEs to improve Internally Generated Funds (IGF) in order to lessen their excessive reliance on handouts from the central government.

Allowances per month

Former Local Government Minister Dr. Ofosu Ampofo told the audience that the government was dedicated to decentralization and that assembly members would now get monthly allowances for the first time since the 1992 Constitution was passed.

He said that in accordance with the present administration’s pledge to raise the standard of living for assembly members, such allowances had already been included in the budget.

Accordingly, Dr. Ampofo asked the assembly members to perform up to par, saying, “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

Therefore, Dr. Ofosu Ampofo counseled the MDCEs to exercise caution in their public and private behavior, stressing that they must embody President John Mahama’s principles of knowledge, humility, and dedication to legitimate government as his only representatives.

In order to combat unemployment and promote local economic growth, he also exhorted people to take the initiative to identify chances in their communities to execute the government’s 24-hour economy.
