According to President John Dramani Mahama, the elimination of the Emissions Levy, Betting Tax, and Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) fulfills his pledge to reduce Ghanaians’ financial burden and boost the country’s economy.
On April 3, 2025, he posted on Facebook, saying, “Excellent news for our dear Ghana! The legislation that eliminate the E-Levy, Betting Tax, and Emissions Levy have my signature. This satisfies a major commitment we made to reduce the burden on Ghanaians and stimulate the economy.
The public had strongly opposed the levies that had been eliminated. In order to discourage digital financial activities, the E-Levy was implemented in 2022 and imposed a 1% fee on all electronic transactions, including online payments and mobile money transfers.
Industry participants opposed the Betting Tax, which levied a 10% tax on gambling gains, and the Emissions Levy, which was criticized for raising expenses for businesses and car owners.
The Public Financial Management Act, the Value Added Tax Act, and the Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Act have all undergone adjustments. It is anticipated that these adjustments will enhance government fiscal management.
According to the Finance Ministry, the tax revisions will lower expenses for both individuals and companies, promote investment, and aid in economic expansion.
