Osei, who was born in Kumasi, was exposed to musical instruments at a young age. In the seaside city of Sekondi, he started playing the saxophone while trying to form a band with his college pals.
He spent a year working as a construction inspector after graduating from college before starting a band named “The Comets.”
Prior to Osei’s 1962 trip to London, the Comets experienced a brief period of fame. Before being compelled to leave Ghana due to a regime change, he was given a stipend by the government of Ghana to attend a private music and theater school for three years.
He formed Osibisa in 1969 with a number of other musicians, and the band was successful until the 1970s, when it began to wane, but it still performs today.
