MTN FA Cup: Asante Kotoko defeats True Democracy to guarantee a semi-final berth

In their 2024/2025 MTN FA Cup quarterfinal matchup, Asante Kotoko defeated Division One team True Democracy 2-1 thanks to a thrilling last-minute goal from Kwame Opoku.

In the 13th minute, winger Saaka Dauda scored a well-hit goal after jumping on a fast throw-in from Patrick Asiedu, giving Kotoko the lead.

The early goal gave the home crowd hope that the Porcupine Warriors would win easily.

True Democracy, on the other hand, had different ideas, limiting Kotoko’s attacking threats and generating opportunities for them to test the defense. A well-struck low attempt was blocked by Mohammed Camara, who made a crucial stop as True Democracy tried to level.

It was an end-to-end match, with Kotoko nearly increasing their advantage after Asiedu’s strike missed the mark after some excellent left-wing movement by Ntim Manu.

Kotoko led 1-0 going into halftime despite True Democracy’s pressure.

Kotoko found it difficult to penetrate True Democracy’s defense in the second half, and the game changed course when True Democracy equalized with a deflected free kick.

In an effort to find a solution, Kotoko manager Prosper Ogum responded by making two substitutions, replacing Justice Blay and Emmanuel Antwi with Tenadu and Baba Yahaya.

Kwame Opoku jumped on a loose ball just beyond the area and shot it past the goalkeeper to give Kotoko the victory just as it appeared that the game would end in a penalty shootout.
