After talks with General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of Niger, in Niamey, President John Dramani Mahama has urged for improved trade and security ties between Ghana and Niger.
President John Dramani Mahama emphasized the importance of collaboration in tackling regional security risks and boosting economic prospects in a remark that was uploaded to his official Facebook page today, March 10, 2025.
“Efforts to combat terrorism in the Sahel and West Africa, enhance trade between our two nations, and fortify diplomatic ties were among the topics of our discussions,” he stated.
In order to further regional stability, the president also asked the Alliance of Sahel States—a group formed by Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso following their expulsion from ECOWAS—to interact with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The purpose of President John Dramani Mahama’s trip to Niger is to promote economic cooperation and deepen ties throughout West Africa.
He discussed security issues, economic collaborations, and Mali’s possible return to ECOWAS with General Assimi Goïta, the Transitional President of Mali, in Bamako on March 8.
President John Dramani Mahama visited Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Gabon prior to his trip to Mali, where he had talks on diplomacy, trade, and security.
He characterized these visits as an effort to strengthen Ghana’s ties with its neighbors.
Next up for President John Dramani Mahama is a trip to Burkina Faso, where talks are anticipated to focus on security issues as the nation fights armed insurgencies.
Due to Ghana’s close economic relations with Burkina Faso, especially in cross-border trade and agricultural exports, trade will also be discussed.
