According to the foreign minister, 50 Ghanaians might be deported from the US by the middle of the year.

Fifty of the 150 Ghanaians detained in the United States have been given final deportation orders and are anticipated to return to Ghana by the middle of the year, according to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Three Ghanaians have already been processed for deportation and are expected to depart the United States on commercial flights between March 19 and April 1, 2025, Mr. Ablakwa said during his speech in Parliament on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

According to the Washington mission’s updates, “150 Ghanaians are currently detained in various centers in the United States awaiting deportation for crimes such as rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry,” he said.

50 of the 150 inmates have final deportation orders and will be deported by the middle of the year, he added, while the other 100 cases are either being appealed or have been dropped.

The Minister also emphasized the Ghanaian government’s attempts to step in in certain situations, pointing out that one Ghanaian prisoner was released on medical grounds after diplomatic appeals.

“One Ghanaian has been released to seek medical attention after submitting representations to US authorities on his behalf due to his poor health,” Mr. Ablakwa revealed.

The Ghanaian Embassy has also conducted interviews with ten Ghanaians to confirm their nationality and make sure they have been given fair hearings.

The Foreign Minister gave Parliament the assurance that his ministry is keeping a careful eye on the issue and coordinating with US authorities to guarantee that the rights of impacted Ghanaians are upheld during the deportation procedure.
