During an anti-galamsey operation at Assin Asaman, a police officer drowned in the Central Region’s River Offin.
The police officer, named as Constable John Kwabena Dogbe, drowned Wednesday morning, according to Shirley Asiedu Addo, Central Regional Correspondent for Graphic Online.
Following a four-hour search, the body of Constable Dogbe was found in the river.
According to reports, the incident happened during a swoop that the Central North Regional Police Command conducted as part of their continuous attempts to stop illicit mining in the area.
In the Central Region and elsewhere, Galamsey operations continue to seriously damage the environment by contaminating waterways and destroying vast areas of land.
As a result, the Central North Regional Police Command launched the raid in an attempt to curb the growing threat of galamsey in the region, especially along the Offin River.
According to a source who spoke to Graphic Online, the suspected illegal miners ran to the other side of the river bank at Assin Asaman when they saw the police.
According to the source, Constable Dogbe slid and drowned while attempting to remove and destroy the tools being used in the illicit mining operations, such as water pumping devices and a changfang.
