Yaa Naa Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, has urged President John Mahama to give the Northern Region’s development first priority while maintaining accountability and openness in government.
Yaa Naa gave a speech on Saturday, March 22, during President Mahama’s thank-you trip, congratulating him on winning the election and urging him to continue his dedication to good government.
Yaa Naa welcomed the President to his palace and thanked him for appointing people from the area to important government posts, promising to help make sure they work hard.
Nonetheless, he emphasized the necessity of an administration devoid of corruption and conceit, warning against any wrongdoing by public servants.
Northern Region Development Priorities
The Dagbon ruler outlined the main issues confronting the area, such as the need for agricultural changes, poor healthcare facilities, and insufficient access to drinkable water. In order to alleviate the ongoing water constraints, he emphasized the significance of finishing the Yendi and Tamale water projects.
Regarding agriculture, he asked the government to fund new initiatives and repair irrigation dams like the Bontanga Dam in order to assist rural areas that are impacted by unpredictable rainfall patterns.
Speaking about healthcare, Yaa Naa Abukari II bemoaned the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s inadequate medical facilities and lack of contemporary diagnostic tools, urging quick fixes to enhance healthcare provision.
In order to honor the region’s cultural legacy, he also suggested renaming Tamale International Airport “Gbewaa International Airport” and urged its third phase to be completed as soon as possible.
Economic development and education
In order to increase access to secondary education, he asked the government to finish the ongoing e-block school projects.
He also urged the Sheini iron ore project to be revived, pointing out that if it were to be implemented successfully, it would provide much-needed jobs for young people.
In order to increase production and improve the shea butter industry’s competitiveness on the international market, he also suggested creating a regulatory organization.
Demand accountable leadership
Yaa Naa Abukari II expressed hope that his administration will solve the issues facing the Northern Region and praised President Mahama for his prompt policy moves.
He encouraged him to strive toward bettering the lives of all Ghanaians and wished him wisdom and divine direction in his leadership.
