A five-member committee has been established by John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, to look into the problems resulting from the September 2023 floods brought on by the Akosombo Dam leak.
The government’s dedication to controlling the environmental effect and protecting the safety and means of subsistence of impacted people is demonstrated by this program.
Under the direction of Ing. Kirk Koffi, the committee has been charged with investigating what caused the leak, reviewing the reaction to the floods, determining which regions were impacted, and analyzing the difficulties faced. It will also examine the tactics used to lessen the effects and provide both short-term and long-term fixes.
In order to adequately address the destruction brought about by the flooding, Hon. Jinapor emphasized during the inauguration the significance of a concerted response. “If there ought to be compensation, how does the Government go about it?” he said, bringing up the subject of victim compensation.
In order to avoid future events of this kind, he further emphasized the necessity of sustainable flood management techniques. The Minister urged important parties, such as representatives of the local government, civic leaders, and environmental specialists, to furnish the committee with pertinent data to bolster its efforts. He also promised the committee his undivided attention to make sure they completed their task successfully.
Ing. Kirk Koffi, the committee’s chairman, thanked the minister for giving him the chance to take on such a significant assignment. He gave the government his word that the committee would fulfill its job within the allotted period.
Mr. Kwame Jantuah, Ing. Kofi Ellis, Ing. Kwaku Akosa, and Ms. Georgette Emefa Fugah, Esq. (Secretary) are other committee members.
