As the sole candidate from Central Africa, Samuel Eto’o, President of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), was unanimously elected to the CAF Executive Committee in Cairo on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
One of the main events on Wednesday in Cairo was Eto’o’s election to the CAF’s decision-making council.
Following his initial exclusion by CAF’s governance committee in January, Eto’o was granted inclusion as a candidate by the Court of Arbitration for Sport only last week.
Last year, the 44-year-old former Cameroon striker was suspended by both CAF and FIFA for breaking disciplinary rules.
After an inquiry into his work as an ambassador for a betting firm, which was deemed to be a violation of CAF’s ethical and integrity rules, the organization issued the suspension.
On appeal, though, the prohibition and a $200,000 punishment were later lifted.
Together with the five other recently elected members of the CAF Executive Committee, Eto’o was greeted warmly by the delegates present when his name was called.
Since taking over as Fecafoot’s leader in December 2021, Eto’o has encountered criticism.
Some former international players have attacked his leadership style, calling him a “dictator” for his handling of the selection of Marc Brys as head coach of the Indomitable Lions. He was also banned from Cameroon games for six matches last September.
