“Work quickly; your four years are running out.” – Mahama to deputy ministers

Reminding newly inducted deputy ministers that their term in office is only four years, President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged them to tackle their task with urgency.

The President emphasized that political appointees must work within a constrained timetable to provide outcomes for Ghanaians, in contrast to career public officials who have job security till retirement, at the swearing-in event held at Jubilee House on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

President Mahama stated, “We hear two clocks as those elected by the people of Ghana to lead them.”

The first is that our four-year term is coming to an end. The public service personnel you will be working with are guaranteed employment until they retire at age 60. They might not have the same sense of urgency as you since their clock runs more slowly. It is your responsibility to inspire and urge them to work as quickly as necessary to satisfy the public’s expectations.

As he swore in 13 deputy ministers and one minister of state, he made statements that reaffirmed his administration’s plan to simplify government while making sure that important ministries get the backing they need.

The new hires were advised by President Mahama to avoid complacency, collaborate closely with their sector ministers, and take initiative. “We will succeed if you can instill this sense of urgency in those you engage with,” he said.
