For the Ablekuma North collation, we’ll supply security — Police

The Ghana Police Service has stated that it is prepared to offer security for the compilation of the results of the 2024 parliamentary election for the Ablekuma North constituency.

Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)’s Director of Public Affairs, assured reporters during a press conference last Tuesday in Accra that the police are always prepared to provide election security and that the Electoral Commission (EC) is responsible for finalizing security arrangements with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the collation process.

The Electoral Commission
The Ghana Police Service’s pledge that the results of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election would be protected was still pending, according to the EC.

The Returning Officer is unable to examine the results and decide on the winner until the police have given the required security guarantee.

To discuss security arrangements, the EC had planned a meeting with the IGP; however, the IGP was allegedly unavailable, thus the meeting never happened.

While the police insisted that the EC follow up with the IGP to schedule a date for the meeting, the EC stated that it could not move without police approval.

In his concluding remarks prior to Parliament’s hiatus, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga said he hoped the matter would be settled so that the constituency would have representation when the House met again for the following session.

Candidates
The NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn and the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie are running for the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.
