AMA to lock shops over unpaid fees, property rates from June 22

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has announced it will commence a revenue enforcement exercise on Monday, June 22, 2026, to lock shops and premises belonging to businesses and property owners who have failed to pay statutory fees.

In a statement issued on June 19, the AMA said the exercise targets defaulters of Business Operating Permit fees, Property Rates, and Rent due to the Assembly. Businesses and premises found to be in arrears will be locked and temporarily closed until all outstanding payments are settled.

The exercise will be conducted by authorised officers of the Assembly with support from relevant enforcement agencies.

The AMA advised affected ratepayers to settle all outstanding obligations immediately to avoid inconvenience.

The Assembly reminded ratepayers that payment of these fees is a legal obligation and a critical source of funding for essential services, infrastructure development, sanitation management, and public health interventions.

Penalties may be imposed on defaulters in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) and the Assembly’s applicable by-laws.

The AMA urged all businesses and property owners to cooperate to ensure the success of the exercise and contribute to the development of a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Accra.
