The Ghana Police Service has interdicted five of its personnel after they were captured in viral videos engaging in conduct deemed to have brought the Service into disrepute.
Some viral videos show police officers stopping illegal miners and allegedly demanding money instead of enforcing the law at a galamsey site.
In a statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate on Monday, May 4, the Police said the officers have been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau for investigation in line with internal disciplinary procedures.
“The Ghana Police Service has interdicted five (5) personnel sighted in viral videos engaging in acts that tend to put the name of the Service into disrepute,” the statement said.
The officers named include Chief Inspector Matthew Blay, Chief Inspector Francis Arthur, Inspector Eric Osei of the Osu Police Station in Accra, Sergeant Amos Dery of the National Protection Unit, and Inspector Joseph Okyere Asabre of the Obuasi Police District.
According to the statement, the Service has reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and accountability as investigations proceed.
“The Ghana Police Service reiterates its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability, and assures the public that appropriate action will be taken upon the conclusion of the investigation,” it added.
