Following a devastating fire that destroyed hundreds of shops in Kumasi’s Adum Central Business District, President John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger fire safety regulations in marketplaces.
President Mahama expressed his sympathies to the impacted traders during his tour of the area on Friday, March 21, and promised assistance to those who had lost their jobs.
He did, however, urge market merchants to put safety first, cautioning against using gas cylinders for cooking in public areas, which is thought to have played a role in the fire.
“Fire safety must be taken seriously. Cooking on the market is quite dangerous, especially when using gas cylinders. He warned that everyone must share responsibility for preventing such tragedies.
Because of the flammable items kept in the stores, the fire, which began early on Friday, spread quickly.
Due to slow response times and blocked access routes, firefighters found it difficult to suppress the fire. Concerns regarding electrical malfunctions as a potential cause were raised by certain dealers who connected the tragedy to continuous power disruptions.
Mahama also emphasized the need for improved infrastructure and emergency readiness in Ghana’s marketplaces and demanded a comprehensive probe into the incident to stop such incidents in the future.
Traders were appreciative of his presence, and many of them were relieved that he would help them after their losses.
