The new Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor.
Following pronouncements by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who reorganized many directorates and regional commands, she is among the senior officers who were recently transferred within the Ghana Police Service.
These modifications are effective immediately, according to a March 19, 2025, statement from the Police Service’s Public Affairs Directorate.
Throughout her distinguished career, DCOP Donkor has made a remarkable impact in the fields of law enforcement, legal practice, and human rights advocacy.
Her dedication to service and her significant achievements in these areas have set her apart as a key figure in Ghana’s evolving legal and law enforcement landscape.
She is the Chairperson of the Security Committee of the Ghana Football Association as well as the CEO for the Police Ladies Football Club.

DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor is a graduate of Wesley Girls Senior High School. She started her academic career at the University of Ghana, Legon, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and Political Science. She then solidified her legal knowledge by pursuing a Barrister-at-Law qualification at the Ghana School of Law. After realizing she needed more specialized training, she obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in International and Human Rights Law from the esteemed University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
A profession in law enforcement
DCOP Donkor’s career experience is an amazing combination of law practice and law enforcement. She began her career as an Associate at Acquah-Sampson & Associates, where she handled litigation and legal drafting. She also represented poor communities as a Pro Bono advocate for the Legal Aid Board in Takoradi, where she fought for children’s rights and gender equality.
She rose quickly through the ranks of the Ghana Police Service, serving as Head of Legal & Prosecutions in several regions, Divisional Commander of Tesano, and District Commander of Tesano-Accra. Her commitment to justice and the rule of law also earned her a position in international peacekeeping, where she served as a United Nations Police Officer (UNPOL) in Liberia, where she was instrumental in conducting internal evaluations and handling conduct and discipline issues. Having been called to the bar nearly 25 years ago, she is currently the most senior lawyer in the Ghana Police Service.

From attending the United Nations Senior Mission Leaders’ Course in Korea to the International Association of Women Police Officers’ Conferences in Canada, South Africa, and the United States, DCOP Donkor has always been a lifelong learner and expert in counter-terrorism, anti-human trafficking, money laundering, and election security.
Supporting Women’s Empowerment and Human Rights
In addition to her work in law enforcement, DCOP Donkor is a proud member of the Ghana Bar Association, the Police Ladies Association, and the International Association of Women Police Officers. She is currently the Chairperson of the Ghana Football Association’s Safety & Security Committee and a Safety and Security Officer for the Confederation of African Football, traveling throughout the continent to ensure that games are safe for players, fans, and officials. She has also transformed the Police Ladies FC, one of the most successful teams in the Ghana Women’s Premier League, where she serves as Chief Executive Office. Her involvement in football demonstrates her dedication to community service and encouraging women in sports.

DCOP Donkor is committed to improving the effectiveness and accountability of law enforcement in Ghana while mentoring the upcoming generation of police officers and legal professionals. She currently holds the position of Director-General of the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB), where she continues to set high standards for professionalism and integrity in the Ghana Police Service.
